New Social Media Opportunities for Healthcare

Published

on

When a loved one undergoes surgery, family members are often pacing the waiting room or nervously waiting for a phone call, hoping for updates from hospital staff.

Imagine being the doctor who posts live updates on Twitter (with the patient’s consent of course) from the operating room. The tweets are visible to anyone following the hospital’s Twitter feed, but most importantly they’re visible to the family waiting to hear how their loved one is doing.

Tweeting from the OR, training medical students with video and live chats, receiving real-time feedback from patients on new products or services—these are just a few of the new opportunities that social media is bringing to the healthcare industry.

The question is, how will you use social media to take your medical practice or healthcare facility to the next level?

Here are some healthcare brands that are using social media new and innovative ways.

#1. Mayo Clinic

Mayo Clinic is one example of a brand that has completely embraced social media. Their Center for Social Media has a stated mission to “lead the social media revolution in healthcare, contributing to health and well being for people everywhere.”

Mayo Clinic posts daily and weekly postings on YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter (with over 100,000 followers). They use social media to announce patient stories, inspirational quotes, and even provide video tours.

#2. Hermann Northwest Hospital

Another exciting example is Houston’s Hermann Northwest Hospital. Dr Michael Macris and Dr. Paresh Patel performed the world’s first live-tweeted open-heart surgery in March of this year. Marcris performed the procedure while Patel posted status updates on Twitter. According to Mashable, there were an estimated 125 million impressions through Twitter, Storify, and media coverage.

#3. Department of Health and Human Services

DHHS is also using social media for exchanges of information between the public and emergency responders. According to iHealthBeat, during the 2009 outbreak of H1N1 influenza, also known as swine flu, DHHS broadcasted information over YouTube and iTunes to update the public about the disease. In addition, regional health departments posted Twitter updates about the availability of H1N1 vaccines.

#4. ‘The Miami Project’

Social technologies are being used to enhance the quality of care for diabetic populations in low income areas.  In a joint effort between Microsoft and the University of Miami, a group of diabetes patients were given computers and trained on the Internet.

They were then able to communicate with doctors and nurse practitioners via social media sites.  Information about about weight and self-administered blood sugar tests were shared, and a virtual classroom to learn about nutrition, exercise, and diabetes care were implemented.

Patients were able to send instant messages and email to their healthcare providers and to discuss diabetes with other patients via social media sites.

Here are some ideas for using social media at your organization.

Healthcare marketing

Through Facebook and Twitter you have an opportunity to promote your healthcare facility’s newest advances, current care systems, and upcoming healthcare events.

Healthcare training

Participants in an online webinar or training event (attending from anywhere in the world) can communicate instantly to make the most of an education opportunity. Using social media during training allows for the following benefits:

  • Question and answer sessions conducted in a shorter time frame.
  • Presenters and teachers receive responses from participants or students in real-time.
  • Various media (PowerPoint slides, videos) can be added to the training to share with everyone at once.

Sharing information of live procedures

Posting updates on Twitter and Facebook during a live procedure offers healthcare audiences some powerful insights into what takes place in the OR. This in itself will help to answer questions, alleviate fears, and inform people about their loved one’s condition.

Key Take Away

There are many possibilities for using social media in healthcare. Physicians and medical professionals have been using social media to reach patients and other audiences in bold new ways. The future of healthcare is changing every day thanks to social media and the opportunities to communicate with a world of multiple audiences.
